Role: Project Manager and Designer
One hour from Manhattan at the end of the subway A line, are the street remains of a remnant bungalow community from the 1920’s. Here a 35 acre beachfront preserve will replace the deserted landscape and be placed in care of the New York City Parks Department. The asphalt of the old streets will be removed and seeded with a grass mix marking the site with strips of succession. Working with an ecologist, WRT mapped out points of interest in the landscape to create a trail system through this delicate and ever moving dunescape. The preserve is also adjacent to a planned mixed use development and will have a new Dune Center by Weisz + Yoes Architecture to welcome the neighborhood into the site. A demonstration garden around the Dune Center will exhibit how dunes grow over time by embedding low metal walls into the landscape.
